Joel S. Seidel & Associates represents West Hills residents in divorce and related family law matters. Our attorneys bring more than 60 years of combined legal experience to this work, and we develop each strategy around the client’s circumstances, priorities, and goals.

Founding attorney Joel S. Seidel has been a Certified Family Law Specialist since 2004. This credential from the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization recognizes attorneys who have demonstrated substantial involvement and tested knowledge in family law.

Working with a divorce lawyer requires candid communication about personal and financial decisions. We provide individualized attention while drawing on the collective knowledge of our attorneys, giving each client a strategy informed by direct attorney involvement and team-based preparation.

Issues a California Divorce May Need to Resolve

A divorce legally ends the marriage and may require spouses to resolve related financial and parenting issues. The terms that matter depend on the family’s finances, whether the spouses share children, and which decisions remain disputed.

    Common issues include:

    • Property division
    • Child custody
    • Parenting arrangements
    • Child support
    • Spousal support

California is a no-fault divorce state. A spouse may seek dissolution based on irreconcilable differences, meaning the marriage has broken down and can’t be repaired. Filing first doesn’t give one spouse greater authority over the case or its decisions.

Spouses may settle some or all terms through direct agreement or mediation. A neutral mediator helps them work toward agreed terms but doesn’t decide unresolved issues. When the parties can’t reach an agreement, the court may need to resolve their disputes.

    California Filing & Timing Requirements

To file for divorce, at least one spouse generally must have lived in California for the six months immediately before filing and in the filing county for the preceding three months. Eligibility depends on the spouses’ residence history when the petition is filed.

California also imposes a mandatory waiting period. Although often described as approximately six months from filing, the statutory period begins when the respondent is served with the summons and petition or first appears in the case, whichever happens first.

The waiting period can’t be waived, even in an uncontested divorce. Service dates, unresolved issues, required disclosures, and court scheduling can make the process longer. Family law cases for West Hills residents are generally handled at the Los Angeles County Superior Court courthouse that serves their part of the San Fernando Valley, subject to applicable filing and venue rules.

Our Approach to Your Divorce Case

From the first contact, we provide a clear path toward formal representation and case preparation.

Our process follows a defined sequence:

    • Initial attorney conversation: An attorney, usually Joel S. Seidel, discusses the circumstances and the prospective client’s objectives.
    • Retainer agreement: A signed retainer agreement formally establishes the attorney-client relationship.
    • Team-based casework: Our attorneys apply their collective knowledge and experience to the details of the case.

When spouses are able to negotiate, mediation may reduce the time spent working through related issues, but it doesn’t shorten or eliminate California’s statutory waiting period. We assess the available path based on the issues, the level of disagreement, and the client’s goals.

Cases We Handle, from Agreement to Litigation

The issues and level of conflict shape how we prepare each case. Our attorneys handle:

    • Contested divorces
    • Uncontested divorces
    • High-asset divorces
    • Same-sex divorces

Legal separation may also be relevant when a spouse doesn’t yet satisfy the residency requirements for divorce. California doesn’t impose the same residency requirement for filing a legal separation, although converting the case to a divorce later requires satisfaction of the applicable residency rules.

    Full Representation & Limited-Scope Consultations

Whether you need full representation or focused legal advice, we begin by discussing the issues requiring attention and the scope of service that fits your needs.

We don’t offer free consultations. If you want legal advice without retaining our firm for full representation, we offer limited-scope consultations at an hourly rate. You can request information about that arrangement by phone or through our contact form.
